Bendoraitis resigns as Eagles AD, football coach

Rantoul Township High School first-year athletic director and head football coach Joe Bendoraitis resigned on Wednesday after only five months at the school, RTHS Superintendent Scott Amerio said.

"Mr. Bendoraitis resigned from the district for family and personal reasons," Amerio said in a prepared statement. "The district will make efforts to try to find his replacement."

The resignation takes effect immediately.

Amerio declined further comment on why Bendoraitis resigned or any situations that might have prompted the abrupt resignation.

"That's the statement we're making," Amerio said.

Bendoraitis, 30, was hired in mid-May as both the school's athletic director and head football coach. It was his first stint as an athletic director and head coach after he served as an assistant football coach at Quincy University, Olivet Nazarene University, Manteno High School and Lincoln-Way East High School.

Whoever RTHS hires to replace him will be the school's fourth athletic director in a whirlwind two-year span.

RTHS athletic director Sally Bryan retired in mid-December 2011, and the school board decided at its September 2011 meeting to not hire Amerio's recommendation of former RTHS boys basketball head coach and teacher Chris Wagner.

Allen Jones Sr. was appointed interim athletic director at the November 2011 board meeting, a position he held until Bendoraitis officially started at the school on July 1.

"We have a couple different options, and we'll see what we can come up with," Amerio said. "We'll see which one works best for us."

The Eagles football program struggled in Bendoraitis' only year, finishing with a 1-8 record for the second straight season.

The only two wins in that time frame came against Stanford Olympia, and the program has not had a winning season or reached the playoffs since 2005.
