RTHS players shine at annual All-Star games

COVINGTON, Ind. — At Friday’s seventh annual girls’ Battle of the Border, the Western Indiana All-Stars defeated the Eastern Illinois seniors 61-46 in the seventh annual girls’ Battle of the Border game.

The Illinois squad was led by Rantoul’s Breezy Espinoza, who broke the previous single-game scoring record with a 19-point performance. Teammate Megan Burton, from Danville, drained five second-half three-pointers and ended with 15 points. Tri-County’s Shayne Smith had 10 points.

Espinoza, a Danville Area Community College recruit, was selected as the game’s sportsmanship winner. Espinoza and Smith accounted for all 21 of their team’s first-half points.

Williams earns MVP

DANVILLE — Player of the Game Kevin Williams, from Rantoul, hit 14 points as the Eastern Illinois Senior All-Stars defeated their counterparts from Western Indiana Sunday afternoon at Danville Area Community College, 63-48, in the final game of the Battle of the Border.

Williams provided a spark during a 15-0 Illinois run that resulted in the game’s last lead change. Williams hit eight points during the streak.
