Three reasons we love sports this week

Sports Editor Matt Daniels’ three reasons we love sports this week.
1. It’s always fun to hear stories or look back at successful teams from the past.

Talking to Brett Frerichs, Donnell Bivens and Kareem Richardson for a story on the 1989-90 Rantoul Township High School boys basketball team you get a sense they would go out and suit up in their high school uniforms if they could.

2. Fisher sophomore Josh Wallick is a big boy. He showed that on the football field in the fall, and did so again on the wrestling mat.

Wallick placed third in Class 1A at 285 pounds to cap a memorable weekend in his first-ever trip to the state tournament at Assembly Hall. Junior teammate Chet McClure placed fifth at 132.

3. When the starting lineups were announced at the RTHS boys basketball game on senior night on Feb. 14, all the lights in the RTHS gymnasium were turned off, with spotlights turned on to re-create an atmosphere seen at most NBA arenas.

“I remember when I was a kid, we used to do that at the Youth Center,” RTHS senior guard Travis Britt said. “To bring that back our senior year in our last regular season home game, it felt good.”
