Three reasons we love sports this week

Sports Editor Matt Daniels’ three reasons we love sports this week.

1. Baseball camps. Rantoul Township High School will host a six-week U.S. Baseball Academy baseball camp this winter. Registration closes Friday, Nov. 23. The camp will start Sunday, Jan. 20, and RTHS baseball head coach Jon Donovan will assist in the camp, which is offered for players in grades 1-12. For more information, visit or call 866-622-4487.

2. Family and football. There isn’t a better time of the year for that than Thanksgiving. For Fisher head football coach Matt Leng and Fisher athletic director Ben Derges, who also doubles as the Bunnies’ defensive coordinator, this will be an extra special Thanksgiving. Derges and his wife, Sara, welcomed in Elliana Grace at 7:16 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. Leng and his wife, Amy, welcomed in Benjamin Ross at 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. He weighed a hearty 8 pounds and was 20 inches long.

3. Speaking of Leng. The gregarious football coach lends us his expert analysis on who he thinks will emerge from Memorial Stadium this weekend with a football state championship trophy. Check it out. It’s bound to make you laugh.
