South Murray Road, east of Rantoul Wal-Mart Supercenter, has opened.

“The contractor officially opened South Murry Road and the Route 136 south double turn lanes this afternoon,” Greg Hazel, Rantoul public works superintendent, said Monday.

The barricades have been removed, and the detour signage was to be removed Monday as well.

Personnel for general contractor Feutz Construction Inc., Paris, Ill., were to sweep the pavement Monday afternoon and have the street lights on in the evening.
Hazel said the turn lane on the north end of the project was recently completed.

“The subcontractor was on site (Nov. 6) doing pavement marking and striping” and has some of the tentative markings down for the turn lanes, Hazel said at the village board’s study session.

Work was delayed a couple of days by bad weather.

The pavement marking and striping resumed Thursday.

Feutz Construction Inc. was awarded the $1.752 million contract for the project, which included replacement of the oil-and-chip surface, pavement, culvert and storm sewer removal, construction of new pavement, earthwork curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalk, entrances, traffic signal relocations and street lighting.

Money to fund the work comes from a state grant as well as part of an Illinois Jobs grant.

The village of Rantoul hopes developers will target the property bordering South Murray Road for commercial development.
