THOMASBORO — The Thomasboro school board approved a new board member at its November meeting.

Derek Wolken was named to fill the vacant seat formerly held by Larry Shurbet.

A former Thomasboro Grade School student, Wolken is a carpenter and works in the community, according to Superintendent Bonnie McArthur.

Wolken has a daughter who attends the school.

Shurbet announced in October that he would be resigning from the board because of other commitments. He had served on the school board for four years.

His resignation was formally accepted at the November meeting.

The board will hold a tax levy hearing at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, just prior to its regular monthly meeting at the school.

The tax rate will climb from 2.5273 last year to 2.6187 this year.

The district is looking at a 13.98 percent levy increase, to raise $680,289.

The board hired Amy Snow as a Title I teaching substitute for Elizabeth Acton, who is going on maternity leave.

Elizabeth Kilty was hired as a Title I teaching assistant.

Doug Mennenga was approved as an assistant boys basketball coach.
