State's attorney provides details on Morrissey stalking case

Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz on Tuesday issued this description of a stalking case to which Jacob Morrissey pleaded guilty in September:

Jacob Morrissey pleaded guilty on Sept. 29, 2015, to Stalking, a class 4 felony, for an agreed sentence of 30 months of probation, credit for two days served in the Champaign County Correctional Center, and an order to have no contact with the named victim.
The charges arose out of a report made to Champaign police by the victim, the boyfriend of Morrissey’s ex-girlfriend, who reported that in early May 2015, he received antagonizing text communications from Morrissey after having told Morrissey to stop texting him, and that on two occasions he saw Morrissey follow him in a vehicle as he was driving.

On one of those occasions the victim went to the Champaign Police Department, where Morrissey called his cell phone. A CPD officer pretended to be the victim, and Morrissey demanded to know where the victim went and did not believe it was an officer on the other end of the line.

During the course of the prosecution, the victim and Morrissey resolved their differences and the victim advised the State’s Attorney’s Office that he did not want to proceed with the prosecution.

Morrissey’s attorney provided the state’s attorney’s with letters of support for Morrissey, as well as a letter from Morrissey himself accepting responsibility for his actions.

Based on this, the case was resolved with an agreed probation disposition.

Morrissey was compliant with the terms of probation prior to the events of this week.
