A man from Georgia is in the Champaign County jail on charges alleging he had sex with a teenage runaway from Texas.

Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said his department was contacted Tuesday night by police in Fort Worth, Texas, that a 16-year-old runaway may be at a motel in Rantoul with a man driving a Ford Mustang with Georgia license plates.

Police went to the Day’s Inn and found a Ford Mustang with Georgia license plates.

Beach said officers found Alexis Gutierrez, 23, in a room with a 16-year-old girl who said she was from Fort Worth.

Gutierrez, who had two different identification cards according to Beach, told police that he had been dating the teen for seven months. He admitted he picked her up at her Fort Worth home after she argued with her mother and they came to Illinois. Gutierrez told police they had been at the motel since Sunday, Beach said.

Gutierrez also admitted that he and the teen had engaged in sex at least three times while in Rantoul.

In the eyes of the law, the teen is not old enough to consent to sex.

Gutierrez was charged Wednesday with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and possession of fraudulent identification.

Judge Richard Klaus set his bond at $250,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for March 19.

Beach said the girl was taken to a shelter in Champaign.
