A Rantoul teenager is being held in the Champaign County jail on $50,000 bond following his arrest in connection with a robbery in downtown Rantoul.

Christian Giovanni Baez, 17, who listed an address in the 1200 block of Magnolia Lane, Rantoul, pleaded innocent on Friday to felony robbery.

According to a police report, two men were leaving their business in the 100 block of North Garrard Street, Rantoul, at about 8:55 p.m. Thursday when they were approached by a man wearing a black jacket, a hood over his head and jeans, with a white handkerchief covering his face.

The man grabbed a bank bag from one of the two victims and ran away.

One of the victims chased the robber, caught him in an alley about a half-block away, tackled him and got his money back.

During the scuffle the white handkerchief fell off the face of the robber, and the tackler recognized him as Baez, police said.

After the robber ran away, the two victims went to the Rantoul Police Department to report what had happened.

Police went to the Baez’s home, arrested him and took him to jail.

On Friday Judge Richard Klaus ordered Baez to have no contact with the victims and set Baez’s next court appearance for April 9.
