URBANA— A Rantoul teen is being held in the Champaign County jail after police found him behind the wheel of a car that had been reported stolen in Urbana.

Malcome J. Pettigrew, 17, who listed an address in Rantoul, pleaded innocent Monday to possession of a stolen vehicle and theft.

According to an Urbana police report, a car was reported stolen in the 2000 block of Cureton Drive in Urbana at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

After police were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle with at least four people in it near an apartment building in the 1000 block of Colorado Avenue at 9 p.m. Saturday, they identified it as the same car that had been stolen earlier in the day.

Police said the driver of the car, identified as Pettigrew was, wearing rubber gloves.

Pettigrew told police that he found the car stopped in the middle of the street on Philo Road with its door open and its engine running, so Pettigrew got in the car and drove away.

Police then arrested Pettigrew and took him to the jail.

Judge Richard Klaus set Pettigrew’s next court appearance for Jan. 29.
