Rantoul chamber office staying put

RANTOUL — The Rantoul Area Chamber of Commerce office is not going anywhere.

The chamber’s board of directors decided last week to keep the office at its current site at 120 E. Sangamon Ave.

There had been some discussion about moving the office back to the Rantoul Business Center, where it had been located prior to its move downtown. The new office opened in January 2016.

“The board ... decided it was in the best interest for the chamber and downtown Rantoul if we maintain our presence where we are currently at,” Chamber Executive Director Belynda Allen said. “We appreciate the village of Rantoul, and we appreciate the patience and support of our members and the community.”

Chamber Board President Michael Fox said earlier that someone from the village of Rantoul had approached Allen about the chamber possibly moving its office back to the business center.

Chamber officials, however, stressed the possible move was only in the talking stage.

Allen said after a recent Rantoul Press article was published, comments she had received were “extremely positive.”

“Everybody understood what the thought process was,” she said. “We didn’t really get negative feedback. People were very trusting and supportive, the businesses and people in the community.”

Chamber board member George Papametro said consideration of moving the office was “to tighten the reins and make sure we had a balanced budget.”
