Rantoul native Ackerman receives Carbondale Bright Spot Award

CARBONDALE — A 2002 graduate of Rantoul Township High School — Darren Ackerman — received the Keep Carbondale Beautiful’s Bright Spot Award for July.

Ackerman earned the award for the work he has done on the house that he owns at 804 W. Cherry in Carbondale.

“It’s a gorgeous place,” according to neighbors, who nominated Ackerman for the award. “He’s done so much work on it. I love that house.”

Ackerman returned the siding to the original wood, which he painted a deep teal. He added a sculpture to the front that he salvaged from a neighbor’s dying bush.

He uses the same approach to garden store sale bins.

“I just bring home what I like,” Ackerman said. “I move things around constantly.”

The Keep Carbondale Beautiful board selects businesses or residences to receive the award for enhancing the beauty of the community by means of revitalization of property, new construction, plantings and beautification, upkeep and maintenance, or rehabilitation.

A graduate of Southern Illinois University, where he earned a degree in health care management, and John A. Logan College, where he earned a degree in nursing,

Ackerman is an RN in the intensive-care unit at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
