Aug. 4 is National Night Out in Rantoul
Six neighborhoods and two churches have planned special events to mark Rantoul's National Night Out observance Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The event is designed to allow individuals to step outside and reconnect with their neighbors as well as public safety personnel who will visit each celebration.

Churches signed up are First United Methodist, 200 S. Century Blvd., 6 to 9 p.m., and United Pentecostal, 410 Cuppernell Ave., 6 to 8 p.m.

Neighborhoods signed up are Golfview Village courtyard at Willow Pond and Golf Course Road, 5 to 7 p.m.; Indian Hills, Moraine Drive, 6 to 8 p.m.; Meadowlands, 6 to 8 p.m.; Golfview Greens (time not listed); Englewood Drive, 1100 block, 6 to 8 p.m.; Hope for the Children, Symington Drive, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Neighborhoods interested in planning an event still have time to sign up by registering online at www.natw.org/nno/reg.html. Once the registration is completed, contact Sara at Rantoul Police Department (892-2103), and she will schedule officers to attend the event.

National Night Out has a new partner and sponsor this year - the first free text-based citizen alert system for public safety agencies. Nixle is the first such service to be extended at no cost to public safety agencies, local governments or their citizens.

Residents can sign up to receive plain-text alerts of emergencies such as tornado warnings as well as missing children and even traffic hazards and community events, sent to their e-mail address or cellular phone.

Some cellular plans charge their customers for receiving text messages, so the messages can also be read by logging in to the Nixle Web site to avoid additional charges.

Police officers visiting participating neighborhoods on National Night Out will bring brochures explaining how to register, and "early adopters" can do so now at www.Nixle.com.

August will be a breaking-in period for residents interested in signing up to evaluate the service. The completion is targeted to commemorate the eighth anniversary of 9/11.
