Kacich: Democrats gained in some GOP strongholds too

It wasn’t just in Champaign and Urbana where Champaign County Democrats made big electoral gains last week.

Even in longtime GOP strongholds like Rantoul and Mahomet, Democrats picked up about 10 percentage points compared with the 2014 midterm election.

Early voting period begins Thursday

RANTOUL — Election Day is Nov. 6, but local voters can cast their ballot starting this week.

At 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, early voting opens at First United Methodist Church, Rantoul.

The site will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will have hours the two weekends before the election.

Rantoul area again has highest taxes in county

URBANA — Property-tax rates are up this year in most areas of Champaign County, but they’re way up in Champaign, thanks to the rate increase for the school building plan approved by voters in 2016.

Despite that increase, a portion of the Rantoul area remains the highest in terms of tax rates.

County board to reconsider nursing home management vote

URBANA — Champaign County Board members will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday to reconsider the vote they took Thursday night to reject extending a contract with the firm that manages the county nursing home.

The board voted 10-9, with Republicans in the majority, against extending for an additional two months the county’s contract with SAK Management Services through July.

URBANA — Members of the special committee reviewing the sole offer to buy the Champaign County Nursing Home say they’re impressed with the bidder’s financial stability but are less inspired by other parts of its proposal.

$210K loan to nursing home approved

URBANA — Champaign County Board members Tuesday night agreed to loan up to $210,000 immediately to make payments to support the Champaign County Nursing Home.

In one vote, board members approved, 15-5, a plan to use the county general fund to cover ongoing nursing home payroll costs.

County receives only one bid to buy nursing home

URBANA — Champaign County received only one proposal Wednesday in response to its request for proposals to buy the Champaign County Nursing Home.

The proposal was submitted jointly by Extended Care Clinical LLC and Altitude Health Services Inc., both headquartered in Evanston.

James officially a U.S. citizen

RANTOUL — Stan James of Rantoul, a former Champaign County Board member who had trouble with the federal bureaucracy over the question of his citizenship, is officially a citizen of the United States of America.

Candidate for county executive sets town hall meeting Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Rantoul

One of the two candidates for Champaign County executive will hold a town hall meeting next week in Rantoul to meet with voters and explain the office, which will be on the ballot for the first time in November.

Republican candidate Gordy Hulten will hold the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Rantoul Municipal Building, 333 S. Tanner St.
