Panel endorses barn's reuse as events center

URBANA — A rural-Flatville couple wants to convert a former dairy barn into an events center to host weddings and receptions.

Arik and Kylie Miller plan to renovate a burgundy and white barn on their 10.3-acre property at 2079 County Road 2600N, less than a mile from Flatville, into an event center with a capacity for 300 guests.

Lottery to decide rural Ludlow solar site chances

URBANA — The Illinois Power Agency will hold a lottery Feb. 13 to award contracts for renewable energy credits to solar farms, and a proposed Ludlow site is among the candidates.  

In Champaign County alone, the Ludlow site will compete with two proposed St. Joseph area projects, a project near Sidney and likely one near Homer.

Champaign County Board facilities committee gets firsthand look at jails

URBANA — Champaign County’s new sheriff and new county board leadership have begun the process of addressing the needs of an aging jail built in 1980 and a second jail, built in 1996, that is bursting at the seams to meet modern needs.

On Tuesday, Sheriff Dustin Heuerman and his staff led the board’s facilities committee on a tour of the downtown and satellite jails.

Bathroom blaze causes minimal damage to Fisher home

FISHER — A Sunday afternoon fire caused minimal damage to a Fisher home, according to a fire department report.

Sangamon Valley Fire Chief Eric Stalter said firefighters were called to a single-story home at 200 Broadway Street at 5:05 p.m.

Stalter said there had been a small fire in a bathroom.

Rantoul man among Urbana shooting victims

URBANA — Urbana police are investigating two shootings, one late Saturday night on University Avenue and one early Sunday morning on Green Street.

A Rantoul man was injured in the first shooting. Police report no known injuries in the second shooting.

Champaign County Board OKs another $6M in nursing home expenses

URBANA — The Champaign County Board has decided to once again open its checkbook to help out the soon-to-be-sold Champaign County Nursing Home.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, the board voted 16-4 to appropriate $1,980,400 to pay off bills to nursing home vendors dating back to the 2015 fiscal year.

As the Rantoul area trudged through more than a half-foot of snow Sunday, meteorologists warned that more could be on the way in a matter of days.

“There’s a storm coming Friday night or Saturday morning that looks interesting,” said Ed Shimon, a senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Christmas Eve fire damages Fisher home

FISHER — Nobody was injured in a Christmas Eve fire in Fisher.

Sangamon Valley Assistant Fire Chief Darren Kuhns said firefighters were called to a single-story home at 61 Glenbrook Lane at 2:29 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters from the Cornbelt Fire Protection District provided mutual aid by standing by at the Sangamon station.
