Fisher High celebrating homecoming

FISHER — Fisher High School is celebrating homecoming this week with a theme of "Fantasy Land."

The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept.19, with a pep rally to follow.

The seniors have chosen a theme of  “Outer Space/Aliens,” juniors have chosen “Pirates,” sophomores have chosen “Medieval Times,” and freshmen have chosen “Neverland.”


Rantoul boys place second at Urbana Open

The Rantoul boys' team tied for second at the 75th Urbana Open, the best finish by a local school at the nine-team meet. Jerry Harper won the 400-meter dash in 51.29 and Donnell Robertson claimed the title in the 110 hurdles in 15.66 for Rantoul's two individual wins.


Rantoul native named Champaign Centennial principal

CHAMPAIGN — Centennial High School’s next principal is a familiar face.

On Monday night, the Champaign school board named Associate Principal Chuck Neitzel to succeed first-year Principal Brian Riegler, whose resignation takes effect June 30.

It is hard for me to believe that just a little over four years ago, I started working with unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. Little did I realize how the demand for this information would consume my time, but it has been an incredibly exciting time.


Adult clothing, shoe giveaway June 10, 17

RANTOUL — Church Women United will hold a giveaway of adult clothing and shoes the following two Saturdays.

The giveaways are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 10 and June 17, at Bethany Park Christian Church, 1401 E. Grove Ave.

The event is open to the public. People should bring their own bags. No crafters. Call Loretta Overholt at 643-2061 with questions.

COVINGTON, Ind. — At Friday’s seventh annual girls’ Battle of the Border, the Western Indiana All-Stars defeated the Eastern Illinois seniors 61-46 in the seventh annual girls’ Battle of the Border game.


A-P baseball, softball grab wins

Dalton Loschen had two hits and Shawn Reardon homered as visiting A-P (1-9) won its first game last Wednesday. Jason Sollars struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings. Vaughn Black drove in three runs for the Hilltoppers (1-11). Teammate Syrus Sears had two RBI at Danville Stadium.

Obama commutes Paxton man's drug sentence

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Paxton man is one of three East Central Illinois men who were granted commutations, or shorter prison sentences, last week by President Obama.

Obama has commuted the sentences of 1,385 individuals – the most grants of commutation issued by any President in this nation’s history, according to Neil Eggleston, counsel to the President.


GCMS/Fisher wrestling defeats Braidwood Reed-Custer, loses to Clifton Central in season opener

BRAIDWOOD — Cole Maxey, Jacob Horsch, Lucas Chittick, Preston Braaten and Jared Trantina all won by pins to lead the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher Falcons to a 54-24 win against, Reed-Custer. Maxey, Braaten, Chittick and Trantina all earned pins against Clifton Central, but the Falcons lost 45-34.
