Alcohol use cost Champaign police officer from Fisher his job

URBANA — A Champaign police officer from Fisher charged earlier this month with burglary had alcohol in his system while on the job, including at a firearms training event last fall.

Documents released by the department Wednesday show 43-year-old Justus Clinton was serving as an instructor Sept. 30, 2017, and was observed displaying erratic behavior and having an odor of alcohol.

Francis Edelen, killed in a Wednesday night hit-and-run accident on Interstate 57 about 3 miles north of Rantoul, saw his most action as an Illini as a true freshman in 2015-16. He was the starter at 125 pounds, winning two matches. He competed at the Big Ten meet, but did not place.

RANTOUL — Illinois State Police say a member of the University of Illinois wrestling team was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 57 3 miles north of Rantoul.

Trooper Tracy Lillard said Francis Edelen, 21, of Manhattan, Ill., had been involved in a two-car accident around mile marker 253.5 at around 9:37 p.m. on I-57 southbound.


Volunteers needed for Saturday's Gifford tree planting

GIFFORD — Last April, close to 200 donated trees were planted in front of homes throughout tornado-raved Gifford.

This weekend, the Champaign County Farm Bureau will return to the village to finish the job.

Champaign County Farm Bureau Manager Brad Uken said Saturday's planting will partly target properties that were in too bad a shape last year to take on a new tree.
