Fisher bank chief, others meet President Trump

FISHER — It was a chance for one president to meet with another.

The invitation was too good for Fisher National Bank President Mike Estes to ignore.

So Estes and Ryan Heiser — the senior vice president at Fisher National Bank of Mahomet — traveled to Washington, D.C., last week where they were lobbying for community bank regulations.

Boys basketball: Frerichs back as RTHS boys basketball head coach

RANTOUL — Eighteen months after he resigned, Brett Frerichs is back in charge of the Rantoul High School boys’ basketball team.

His hiring was approved Monday night at a the district’s school board meeting.

When he stepped aside in November 2013, it was due to a conflict with work. Frerichs is employed at BSN Sports.


Boys Regional Basketball: Timberwolves end Fisher's season

Trevor Hurt scored 12 points and Marquez added 11 as Cissna Park (16-13) topped Fisher 40-32 Wednesday. The Timberwolves committed seven turnovers.

“Fisher is a great defensive team and hard to score on,” Cissna Park coach Kevin Long said. “We did a great job keeping them off the boards.”

Like many of us who write about sports, he was a sports fanatic.

One of the last times we talked, he asked me to hang on a minute. I knew the reason even before he told me.

There’s the strength associated with someone who can bench-press 340 pounds and squat-lift 575.



There’s the strong will needed for a person who won a wrestling state championship as a junior and was top-ranked all season as a senior.


Hannah Varner takes second at state three-point shootout

There was probably not a more unlikely player to advance to state in the IHSA three-point shooting contest than Fisher’s Hannah Varner.


During the regular season, she attempted one three-point shot.


“When we played Shiloh, with about five seconds left, I tried one,” Varner said. “I missed it.”


She did much better on her subsequent attempts.


Eagles "shocked" after early regional loss ends season

CHAMPAIGN — Rantoul High School knew what to expect from Urbana.

“I watched four game films and saw them in person on Friday,” coach A.J. Richard said.

What the Eagles didn’t know was how well the Tigers would execute their game plan.


Volleyball: Trojans win county tourney

GEORGETOWN — Morgan Zindars remembers the seniors from past years and the encouragement they provided as the annual Vermilion County tournament drew near.

The veterans reminded everyone to pick up their play. “Lets do it,” Zindars recalled hearing. ”It’s our last chance to win the championship.”
She listened, but admitted, “as a lower grade, I thought that was stupid.”
