Fire destroys large storage building near Thomasboro

THOMASBORO — Fire destroyed a large storage shed and its contents Thursday night a mile east of Thomasboro.

Thomasboro firefighters were dispatched to 2530 County Road 1600 East at 7:23 p.m.

“On arrival, it was fully involved,” Thomasboro Assistant Fire Chief Jay Arnold said.

The cars and equipment inside were also a “total loss,” according to Arnold.


HCE program focuses on Germany

CHAMPAIGN — Germany was the focus of the Champaign County Home and Community Education’s annual International Luncheon on Nov. 17.

HCE members from units throughout the county brought in potluck dishes native to the country for the luncheon.

Theresa Van Wakeman Wilson and Marvin Lee Flessner provided the entertainment.


Fisher holds mini relay-for-life

FISHER — The first Fisher mini-relay for life was held Oct. 11 at Kellar Field.

There was a silent auction, concessions, a bake sale and luminarias to buy for a survivor or in memory of someone.

Tickets were also sold for four $100 gift certificates for Ingold’s grocery store. Winners were Joe Briggs, Judi Mott, Kasha Bloomstrand and Mike Meyer.


'We were holding each other'

It started out as a normal Sunday afternoon for Brenda and Jeff Mifflin.

The rural Rantoul residents were settling in to watch the Chicago Bears game and were disappointed it had been delayed due to strong thunderstorms. Jeff happened to look out of a large picture window on the west side of the house and saw a sight that made him yell for Brenda to take cover in the basement.


Football: Bunnies hop away with win

FISHER — Sophomore Conrad Thomas gained 195 yards as Fisher got back on track with a 41-26 win over El Paso-Gridley Friday at Kellar Field.

“I think it was just the mindset of getting back to basics,” Fisher head coach Matt Leng said.

Thomas scored two touchdowns, the first on a 46-yard run with 2:19 left in the third quarter.


HCE members celebrate their 'many hats'

SAVOY — Members of the Champaign County Home and Community Education Association donned their best and most colorful headgear to celebrate “The Many Hats of HCE” at an annual meeting with that theme on Sept. 27 at the Savoy United Methodist Church.

Jackie Schweighart of The Mettler Center spoke on the topic of “Heart Health – Exercises for Your Heart.”


Football: Quick, like a bunny, Fisher strikes

FISHER — It was a strange night at Kellar Field, but for Fisher, it was all worth it.

The Bunnies (1-0) survived a 52-minute lightning delay, unusually high temperatures and a determined Ridgeview squad to win a 43-16 thriller Friday night.
