Agronomist says rising crop yields, trade war with China loom over, depress prices

DEWEY — Farmers at the annual Dewey Bank farmers breakfast were a little depressed after hearing a forecast for continued low corn and soybean prices this year.

Todd Hubbs, an agronomist at the University of Illinois, predicted average soybean prices per bushel will be $8.30 in the 2019-20 marketing year, down from $8.50 this year.


Updated: Interstate 57 between Paxton and Rantoul back open

UPDATED 7 p.m.:

LUDLOW— Interstate 57 north of Rantoul re-opened shortly before 7 p.m. after state police shut it down briefly to restring power lines, Sgt. James Kleist said.

The lines had been knocked down by a two-vehicle crash with minor injuries, Trooper Joseph Rush said.

Registration open for Oct. 13 electronics recycling event

CHAMPAIGN — Registration has opened for this fall’s electronics recycling event.

Residents from participating communities can register for 15-minute slots between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at ecycle.simplybook.me.

A little more than half the slots are full, said Nichole Millage, environmental-sustainability specialist for the city of Champaign.


Peoples Gas sued over contaminated wells

MAHOMET — A Champaign law firm filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Chicago utility Peoples Gas over a 2016 leak at natural-gas facility near the Mahomet Aquifer that contaminated private water wells.

Spiros Law filed suit in Champaign County Circuit Court on behalf of 17 plaintiffs from six homes, accusing Peoples Gas of negligence, consumer fraud and battery, among other things.

URBANA — A federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment against four Ford County men, charging three of them with attempted arson in the Nov. 7 attempted bombing of a women’s health clinic in Champaign.


Police search for ex-Thomasboro man for armed robbery

CHAMPAIGN — Police have identified the suspect in Friday’s armed robbery at the Subway in northwest Champaign.

Based in part on multiple Crime Stoppers tips, an arrest warrant was issued Monday for Steven E. Johnson, 31, formerly of Thomasboro, for aggravated robbery with bond on the warrant set at $100,000.
